She told police she saw him hit a fence, damaging both the fence and the vehicle, before driving away, the Brandon Police Service said in a news release.

Just before 1 p.m., police received a call about a possible impaired driver who had abandoned their vehicle in the 200 block of Franklin Street.

Police found the suspect nearby and took him into custody. He gave police breath samples and blew more than three times the legal limit of 0.08, BPS said.

The 36-year-old man is charged with theft of a motor vehicle and impaired driving charges.

He was also issued tickets under the Highway Traffic Act in relation to leaving the scene of an accident and driving without holding a valid licence.

The man was held in custody overnight and was set to be released on Saturday morning, with a court appearance scheduled on Thursday.

Caught in stolen truck

The Brandon Police Service arrested two men after a traffic stop on Sunday.

Police stopped a truck with two men inside near Queen Elizabeth Park at around 9 a.m.

The registered owner of the truck told police that the vehicle had been stolen, and police found out the 27-year-old driver had a warrant out for his arrest, BPS said in a news release.

Officers arrested the driver and in a subsequent search found a knife in his jacket pocket and a rifle in the vehicle’s backseat, with rounds in a sleeve on the stock of the rifle, police said.

Police said they found additional rounds in the backseat, along with a folding-style knife.

The driver was taken to BPS and held in detention cells until his scheduled court appearance on Monday.

The passenger, a 19-year-old man, was also taken to BPS but was later released on an undertaking with a court appearance scheduled in June.

Both men were charged with firearm-related offences and possessing property obtained by crime.

Assault by choking

A man was arrested after he allegedly assaulted a woman on Saturday.

Police responded to a woman calling for help in the 1900 block of Princess Avenue and later arrested a 37-year-old man in the 100 block of 18th Street.

The man and woman were known to each other, the Brandon Police Service said in a news release.

The man is charged with assault and assault by choking. He was held in BPS detention cells.

Arrested for fighting

A man faces two counts of assault after police responded to a “fight” on Sunday.

Police were sent to the 200 block of 18th Street North and arrested a 53-year-old man, the Brandon Police Service said in a news release.

The man was held in BPS detention cells until he was sober and released on an undertaking. He is scheduled to appear in court in June.
