60 YEARS AGOL.C. Robinson and his rink of Alex Watt, Fred Paul and Cam Whitlaw placed first in the annual Lions Club bonspiel in Reston by defeating Lyall Marshall. Alex Mennie won the second event by ousting Bob Moore in the final.

50 YEARS AGOWayne Naka (hockey) and Deb Lovatt (basketball) were honoured as Brandon University’s outstanding athletes last night at the annual awards banquet.

40 YEARS AGOKen Schneider scored three times to lift Spectrum Sportsmen to an 8-3 victory over Cartwright Clippers in the opening game of the Southwest Hockey League final.

30 YEARS AGO — Neepawa advanced to its first-ever appearance in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League championship series after a 4-3 double overtime win over the Dauphin Kings. Ryan Anderson scored two goals and Dale Isfeld and Derek Holland had one each for Neepawa, while netminder Dave Pirnak stopped 35 shots.

20 YEARS AGO — Brandonite Kelly DeRoo and men’s basketball point guard Yul Michel were the big winners at the Brandon University athletics awards night late Thursday. DeRoo, a setter with the first-year women’s volleyball team, was named BU’s female athlete of the year while Michel, a third-year native of Montreal, got the nod as the top male athlete.

10 YEARS AGOJohn Quenneville scored twice and the Brandon Wheat Kings delivered their most dominant performance of the playoffs as they beat the Edmonton Oil Kings 5-0 at Rexall Place. The victory squares the Western Hockey League Eastern Conference quarterfinal series at 2-2.
