• 60 YEARS AGO — Brandon’s Jim MacDonald, who swims with the Shilo Goldeyes Swim Club, shattered the Manitoba record for the 100-yard backstroke for boys 11-12 years old in a swim meet at the University of Manitoba. MacDonald chopped four seconds off of his old record of 1:14.16.

• 40 YEARS AGO — Gerry McDonald of Brandon, along with Addy Armstrong of Winnipeg, earned the right to become Canada’s first entrants in the South Pacific Classic in Australia by outscoring the top bowlers in Manitoba in a 12-game shootout at Northgate Lanes in Winnipeg. McDonald’s total pinfall of 2,510 put him firmly at the front of a 14- man field in the men’s division.

• 30 YEARS AGO — Brandon Blazers Special Olympian Rhonda Hartland blazed her way to a pair of gold medals at the Kinsmen Indoor Track and Field Meet at the University of Manitoba. Hartland raced to first-place finishes in the 50- metre and 200m events.

• 20 YEARS AGO — Glenboro’s Bruce Anderson is getting some recognition as one of curling’s unsung heroes. After 24 years as a member of the Glenboro Curling Club executive, Anderson has been chosen as this year’s recipient of the W.E. (Bill) Lumsden Memorial Award. Originally joining the club in 1964, Anderson was elected to the executive in 1982 and was president of the men’s club in 1985-86. He served another term as president of the amalgamated club in 1994-95.

• 10 YEARS AGO — Logan Boyd and Cody Mauws of Crocus Plains Ghave signed their National Junior College Athletic Association letters of intent with the Mesabi Range College Norsemen and will head down to Virginia, Minn., to play two years of football.
