The Manitoba government is investing $7.6 million in its Urban/Hometown Green Team program to support 624 projects that offer summer employment for youth.

Early announcements included $22,500 toward youth wages for green space maintenance with the City of Brandon’s parks department and $2,800 for the Rivers Baseball Association.

A full list of recipients is expected to be available next week, Caed Malowany, spokesperson for Municipal and Northern Relations Minister Glen Simard, said Friday.

There are roughly 75 projects in western Manitoba that are included in the upcoming announcement, as well as 31 in midwestern Manitoba, Malowany said.

The program is expected to create roughly 1,900 summer job opportunities in more than 170 communities this year.

Funding from the Urban/Hometown Green Team program covers 50 per cent of wage costs on a cost-shared basis with organizations that employ youth. It will be used to help hire Manitobans between the ages of 15 and 29 between May and September for opportunities that contribute to community development.

The funding provided to Rivers Baseball Association was designated to help pay for staff that will perform grounds maintenance.

“Young people bring energy, creativity and a strong desire to contribute to their communities,” Simard said in a news release Thursday. “Our government is proud to support programs that give them meaningful work experience while strengthening neighbourhoods across Manitoba.”

Last year, the program provided funding to several organizations in Brandon, such as the Bethel Christian Assembly, the Brandon Minor Baseball Association and Samaritan House Ministries. The City of Brandon parks department received $33,750 last year for grounds maintenance and community beautification.

The province said on its website that a complete list of summer employers under the program should be available by the end of May to help youth search for summer employment opportunities.

Urban/Hometown Green Team grants are available to non-profit organizations, education authorities, Northern Affairs Community Councils and municipal governments.
