9 a.m. — The Brandon Kiwanis Club bike auction will take place in the Brandon Curling Club at the Keystone Centre. The Brandon Kiwanis Club has a contractual arrangement with the Brandon Police Service to sell bicycles that they recover. People can reclaim their bicycle if they can provide proof that it was stolen from them; usually a picture and a serial number is all that is required. We also obtain and sell donated bicycles. Auction starts at 10 a.m. with viewing at 9 a.m. All sales are final. All proceeds from the sale are used for community projects.

This conference brings together researchers, health professionals, educators, community groups and organizations, mental health advocates and individuals with lived experience from across the country to share knowledge and have critical conversations about mental health. Daly House Museum (122 18th St., Brandon) — Built in 1882, original home of Brandon’s first mayor, Thomas Mayne Daly. Artifacts include a collection of late 19th-century and early 20th-century furnishings, First World War memorabilia. Daly House in partnership with the Brandon Embroiderers presents “The Art of Embroidery: Past and Present,” an exhibit featuring more than 100 embroidery pieces dating from the 1800s to the present. Exhibit is on display until May 20. Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba (Unit 2, 710 Rosser Ave., Brandon) — Free admission. Manitoba’s oldest centre for visual art and one of Canada’s first since 1907. The AGSM boasts two exhibition spaces, an art school and gift shop that supports more than 70 local Manitoba artists. In the Kayes Family Community Gallery are two exhibitions on until June 6, the “Tears of Truth” bead curtain project created by Brandon area students and community members; and “Reconciliation, Resilience and Red” by Justina McKay. The Main Gallery is closed to prepare for the Annual Art Auction Fundraiser and Gala on April 30. Tickets are on sale now. Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum (CATPM) (Brandon Municipal Airport, Highway 10, 1.6 kilometres north of Brandon) — Canada’s only air museum solely dedicated to the preservation of those who trained and fought for the British Commonwealth during the Second World War. Royal Canadian Artillery Museum (Building N-118 Patricia Rd., CFB Shilo) — Discover “WWII Command Posts,” a temporary exhibit at the RCA Museum, showcasing Canada’s mobile command vehicles and their role in co-ordinating artillery and communications during the Second World War. May 3 — Maple Syrup tours at the Assiniboine Food Forest. Enjoy a one-hour tour of the sugar bush and maple syrup operation led by syrup maker Dave Barnes at 11 a.m. If conditions are right, we will be boiling syrup in the evaporator and sap will be dripping into the pails. After your tour, stay and purchase pancakes with fresh maple syrup, bacon and coffee to enjoy at picnic tables around the bonfire. Tours cost $5 per person, cash and credit/debit card accepted. May 5 — Sustainable Brandon presents a fundraising Concert for Climate at Knox United Church (451 18th St.) at 7 p.m. Will feature many well-known musicians, a pie auction and learning about climate protection. Funds will further the work of Sustainable Brandon. Extra parking at MTS lot. Tickets are $20 and are available at the church on Monday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon or Fridays from 9 a.m. to noon or also at the door.

May 5 — A Preschool Wellness Fair for three- to four-year-olds will be held at the Keystone Centre on the upper concourse from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Registrations are accepted until 5 p.m. Talk with reps from Service Canada and Canada Revenue Agency about benefits available for your family. Apply for your child’s Social Insurance Number (bring birth certificate, parent’s SIN number and ID). Offering general development screenings, pre-kindergarten immunizations, speech and language screenings, hearing screenings, therapy dogs. Every child attending will receive a free book from Rotary Club of Brandon and Sunset Rotary. Door prizes and grand prize draws.

May 7 — The Brandon University School of Music welcomes international superstar violinist James Ehnes as he returns to his hometown for a special recital at the Lorne Watson Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. He will be accompanied by pianist Andrew Armstrong in this intimate performance. Reserved seating is $60 and must be purchased in advance. Additionally, a fundraising champagne reception will follow the concert with proceeds to Brandon University’s Ehnes Scholarships in violin and trumpet. May 7 — Daly House’s annual Fundraising Dinner and Theatre event, “Love Letters,” will be held at the Ukrainian Reading Association Hall (1005 Assiniboine Ave.) at 6 p.m. There will be a 50/50 draw, door prizes and a delectable roast beef meal. Debra Mason and James Forsythe perform A.R. Gurney’s Pulitzer Prize-nominated “Love Letters,” a two-person drama made up entirely of letters exchanged between two childhood friends over nearly 50 years. May 7 — The City of Brandon’s Downtown Spring Community Cleanup Day. Calling all community volunteers to help clean up our downtown. Rain or shine. Meet at Princess Park at 1 p.m. Prizes for the best dressed team; most garbage and best picture. Refreshments provided. For more information, call 204-729-2120. Volunteers will be provided with safety vests, gloves, garbage bags, garbage pickers, sharps containers. Registration is encouraged but not necessary.

May 8 — The Brandon Chamber of Commerce’s 143rd Awards Gala will be held in the UCT Pavilion and the Manitoba Room at the Keystone Centre at 5 p.m. Join us for an evening celebrating the strength, adaptability, and success of Brandon’s business community. Step into an immersive reception inspired by this year’s theme: “It’s a Jungle Out There,” and enjoy beverages and curated appetizers while connecting with fellow leaders, innovators and community builders from across Westman. Admission is $185 plus GST per seat. Tables of eight are available. Ticket sales close April 27.

May 8 — The Rotary Westman Wine Festival Tasting event will take place in the Imperial Ballroom at the Victoria Inn with public tasting from 7 to 10 p.m. Tickets are available at all four Liquor Stores in the city.
