Manitoba’s police watchdog has cleared a Brandon Police Service officer who broke a man’s tooth during his arrest in 2023.

BPS officers were dispatched to a domestic disturbance call on May 27, 2023.

Police spoke to a woman and a man at the residence, and after investigating the matter, they decided to search the residence to ensure the man was complying with a release order, the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba said in a release on Thursday.

The man and woman became obstructive, and officers arrested them, the release said. The man was unco-operative while police were handcuffing him, and as police escorted him from the residence, he “managed to break free and attempted to flee,” the IIU said.

An officer told investigators he struck the man in the face twice, the IIU said in its final report on the matter.

The man was taken to the Brandon Regional Health Centre, and once medically cleared, he was held in custody.

The IIU sent the investigative file to the Manitoba Prosecution Service, and it shared the opinion that the standard for prosecuting charges had not been met.

“Therefore, no charges are recommended, and the IIU investigation is now completed and closed,” the final report said.
