Brandon police arrested a suspect in a break and enter following an “extensive search” on Wednesday afternoon.
An employee at a business on the 4800 block of Victoria Avenue East called the Brandon Police Service and said there were three men on the property, one of whom they believed to be a suspect in a break and enter at the business early that morning, BPS said in a news release.
When police arrived shortly after noon, two of the men had left in a taxi, BPS said. Police stopped the taxi and identified the men. The third man reportedly left on foot.
At around 12:36 p.m., police spotted the suspect, who then ran into a tree-lined area along the Assiniboine River, police said.
BPS said officers set up a perimeter and deployed its canine unit.
After an “extensive search in semi-flooded conditions,” police found the suspect, but he refused to surrender, police said.
Officers ultimately caught up with the 48-year-old man and recovered a toolbox in the area that was linked to him and the earlier break and enter, BPS said.
The man was taken to the hospital for medical clearance and later arrested.
Police charged the man with breaking and entering and committing theft, resisting arrest and two counts of failing to comply with his probation order.
He was scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.
