The Koch Fertilizer Canada plant in Brandon has been recognized for its energy performance, earning ENERGY STAR certification for the fifth consecutive year, from 2021 through 2025.

The designation, awarded by ENERGY STAR through the United States Environmental Protection Agency and Natural Resources Canada, is given to industrial facilities that rank in the top 25 per cent for energy efficiency compared to industry benchmarks and meet strict performance standards.

Brandon plant manager Rodi Sveistrup said the recognition reflects both technical performance and the culture behind day-to-day operations.

“For us, environmental stewardship means managing our operations and resources in ways that respect people and the environment while constantly looking for ways to improve and be more efficient,” he told the Sun.

“For example, last fall we completed a major planned maintenance event that included preventive repairs and equipment replacement.”

He said the consistency of the Brandon facility’s certification points to long-term discipline rather than short-term improvements.

“Five consecutive years of Energy Star certification for Koch Fertilizer Canada demonstrates our focus on meaningful results — empowering individuals to strive to use fewer resources, reduce waste and improve how we operate,” he said. “They are a testament to the consistent effort and commitment of our people to keep our facility running reliably.”

Sveistrup said environmental stewardship at the plant is embedded in how operations are managed, rather than treated as a separate objective.

The Brandon facility is one of five Koch Fertilizer Canada plants to receive 2025 ENERGY STAR certification. The others are in Enid, Oklahoma; Wever, Iowa; Fort Dodge, Iowa; and Beatrice, Nebraska.

Together, the five facilities have now accumulated a combined 25 ENERGY STAR certifications since 2019, underscoring what the company describes as a long-term approach to efficiency and operational discipline.

Across its operations, Koch Fertilizer has framed environmental stewardship as a continuous process of improvement, where incremental gains in efficiency and reliability accumulate over time. The company says this includes both major upgrades and everyday operational decisions made by engineering, maintenance and production teams.

Plant leaders across the network echoed similar themes about responsibility, discipline and teamwork.
