A pair of young Quebec bull riders sit atop the leaderboard after the first night of PBR Canada’s PBR Mazergroup Chute Out on Friday at Assiniboine Credit Union Place.

Jayden Roy, 18, of Mascouche, Que., made his debut in Brandon and handled Linebacker for every moment, posting a score of 86.8 to jump into the lead.

Jeremy Maisonneuve, 19, who was wearing a cast on his non-riding arm, was bucked off early but got a re-ride because the bull Knee Knocker dipped down as he came out of the chute. He capitalized on his second chance, posting a score of 85.2 on Effective to temporarily take the lead.

The Tier 1 bull riding event continues tonight at 7 p.m.

Friday’s matchups between bull and rider were set up by a random draw, but tonight’s will be determined by a draft. The 10 riders with the best combined scores after two rounds advance to the championship round and one final ride to crown a winner based on aggregate total of their three scores.

After none of the first three riders lasted three seconds, sixth-ranked Garrett Green of Meeting Creek, Alta., controlled Counting Sheep and posted the first successful ride and a score of 83.5.

Dusty Golden appeared to last 7.67 seconds but he called for a review, and it was judged to be a good ride with a score of 79.7. Meanwhile, his bull, Canadian Cut, didn’t have any inclination to head out of the pen and had to be roped and led back.

Brazil’s Francisco Costa was the third rider to post a score when Joker On A Jack came out of the chute and jumped in circles about 10 feet from the chute for a score of 83.4.

That sparked a run of three successful rides, with North Dakota’s Tyler Villarreal lasting for 7.86 seconds when Write This Down circled in one direction and then twisted back in the other. He also appealed the clock and won, and was given a score of 82.5.

Then, Aaron Roy of Yellow Grass, Sask., who won the event in 2023, made it three in a row when he rode World Wide for a score of 84.4.

Cody Coverchuk of Meadow Lake, Sask., then stayed on Brimstone for an underwhelming eight seconds, and mostly based on the animal’s lack of activity, he only earned a score of 68.5.

That brought up Nick Tetz of Calgary, who had won both events this season, but Payday dumped him in 6.4 seconds.

Gilmar Santana rode Affairs in Order a year ago in Brandon and duplicated the effort on Friday, earning a score of 85.0 to temporarily jump into second place.

Four-time Canadian champion Dakota Buttar of Eatonia, Sask., finished up when he took a score of 84.6 off Patiently Waiting.

In total, 10 of the 27 riders posted a score, with the bulls winning the other 17 matchups.
