The Town of Swan River is looking to strengthen long-term growth and infrastructure planning through proposed economic development initiatives and a major lagoon expansion project included in its 2026 financial plan.

Mayor Lance Jacobson said council has identified economic development as a strategic priority and is exploring the creation of a regional Economic Development Officer position in partnership with neighbouring municipalities.

“The town of Swan River for several years is seeing the value in economic development, and we want to take it that next step,” Jacobson said in an interview.

He said administration has been directed to research what the position would look like and how it could support the broader region.

“We feel that economic development is a very important thing for communities,” he said. “Everything that is good for Swan River is good for the whole valley, and whatever is good for the valley is good for the Town of Swan River as well.”

Jacobson described Swan River as “the hub of the valley” and said the proposed role could help strengthen regional partnerships, economic growth and tourism opportunities.

The town’s five-year capital plan also includes a proposed $7-million lagoon construction project targeted for 2031, alongside a lagoon study planned for the current year.

Jacobson said the project is being driven by long-term capacity concerns.

“Our lagoon that we have right now is coming, I don’t want to say end of its life, but to its capacity,” he said.

He said the study will help determine future direction for the project, which he described as a significant infrastructure undertaking requiring long-term planning.

“Obviously we’ll be reaching out to provincial and federal support on what that might look like in the future,” he said.

The project is expected to rely on a combination of grant funding and municipal borrowing.
