Mounties arrested a Winnipeg man and a Selkirk woman on Wednesday after they allegedly gassed up a stolen vehicle in Sioux Valley Dakota Nation and left without paying.

Virden RCMP received a report around 9 a.m. of two people stealing gas from a station near the intersection of the Trans-Canada Highway and Highway 21, RCMP said in a news release on Friday.

The suspects had put $71 worth of gas into a stolen truck they were driving, and both went into the store to pay with a debit or credit card that didn’t work, police said.

They drove off without paying, travelling west on the Trans-Canada Highway.

RCMP members found the truck on the highway, and when they tried to pull the vehicle over, it turned onto a side road, the release said.

Police didn’t pursue the vehicle because of the risk to public safety but continued to patrol the area, RCMP said.

Officers found the truck abandoned at a property on Road 60 North, near Road 153 West.

RCMP called in the police dog unit and found two suspects in a treed area near the vehicle, police said.

Police arrested Meaghan Driskell, 27, from Selkirk and charged her with several offences, including possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, flight from a peace officer, dangerous driving and theft under $5,000.

Officers also arrested Jordan Getty, 30, from Winnipeg and charged him with possessing property obtained by crime, flight from a peace officer and theft under $5,000.

Both suspects were remanded into custody.
