Brandon police took an 11-year-old boy into custody on Tuesday after he allegedly punched the principal of Earl Oxford School.
The Brandon Police Service received reports of an “escalating and violent” situation involving a student at the K-8 school at 540 18th St. at around 1 p.m.
When officers got to the school, they could hear the youth screaming and striking walls and doors inside a room, BPS said in a news release Wednesday.
Staff told police the student caused “significant” damage, including overturning furniture and throwing items, police said.
A staff member witnessed the student punch the principal in the face several times, BPS said.
Officers and staff worked together to de-escalate the situation while they waited for the child’s parent.
The boy’s mother arrived, and officers allowed her to speak with him, but the boy proceeded to punch a hole through a wall and used the hole to get into the next room, BPS said.
Police said officers took the boy into custody because of safety concerns, and while escorting him from the school, he resisted and kicked an officer multiple times.
The mother was also briefly taken into custody after she repeatedly interfered with police despite being told to “remain back,” BPS said. She was later released without charges.
The youth eventually calmed down, and officers removed his handcuffs and gave him water.
Police arranged for the boy to speak with mental-health professionals at the Child and Adolescent Treatment Centre before they turned him over to his father and CATC staff, BPS said.
“Brandon Police Service continues to work with the Brandon School Division and the family in the interest of safety and support for the child, staff and school community,” BPS said in the release.
