Manitoba’s chief medical examiner has called an inquest into the death of a 41-year-old man who overdosed on methamphetamine while in custody of the Brandon Police Service in 2023.

A hearing will be held at the Brandon Court House on July 6 to determine who can participate in the upcoming inquest into the death of Sean Paul Connors from Headingley, the provincial government said in a news release on Tuesday.

Connors was arrested on Aug. 19, 2023, and taken to the police station in Brandon.

While in custody, he told officers he had ingested methamphetamine, the release said.

Police called emergency medical services for help and Connors was transported to the hospital.

His medical condition deteriorated during transport and staff tried to resuscitate him, but he was eventually pronounced dead at the hospital, the province said.

An autopsy confirmed that he died from a methamphetamine overdose.

The chief medical examiner has called an inquest under the Fatality Inquiries Act to explore the circumstances that led to his death and find out if anything can be done to prevent similar deaths in the future.

Before the inquest begins, the judge will decide who can participate in the process and question witnesses.

Individuals or organizations interested in applying for standing must contact inquest counsel Kerry UnRuh by June 26.
