HOME BREAK-IN

Brandon police arrested a man early Tuesday morning after he allegedly broke into a home, stole a television and discharged bear spray while inside.

Police responded to a residence on the 3100 block of McDonald Avenue after the homeowner reported that someone had broken in shortly before 1 a.m.

She reportedly heard her video doorbell go off, and through the camera, she saw a man at the back of her home, the Brandon Police Service said in a news release.

The woman heard “crashing” through a window at the rear of her home and started to have trouble breathing because of the bear spray, BPS said. When she went upstairs, she noticed her television was gone, police said.

BPS said the suspect drove off in a red truck.

Officers took a statement from the homeowner and took photos of the scene.

Roughly an hour later, a BPS member pulled over a similar vehicle at 18th Street and Richmond Avenue.

Police said the 44-year-old man who was driving the truck matched the man’s image captured on the doorbell camera.

Police arrested him and charged him with breaking and entering with intent. The man blew a warning on a breath test, and BPS issued an immediate roadside prohibition, BPS said.

BPS released the man on an undertaking, and he is scheduled to appear in court in August.

MISSING GIRL FOUND

A 14-year-old girl reported missing to Brandon police has been found.

The girl had last been seen at 1 p.m. on Saturday while at the summer fair in Brandon, the Brandon Police Service said in a news release and social media post on Tuesday.

The girl has since been found safe, BPS said in a Wednesday morning social media post.

“Thank you, Westman, for your concern, support and for sharing the information. Your assistance is greatly appreciated,” BPS said in the post.

FREE WEEKEND AT PARKS

People can hike, swim, fish and explore Manitoba’s provincial parks for free this weekend, the provincial government has announced.

The parks will be free to attend from Friday to Sunday, while people can fish without a licence nearly provincewide during the three days. Regular camping fees still apply.

Guided hikes, demonstrations and tours are all available at select parks, the province said in a news release.

Anglers can fish without a licence provincewide during the weekend, except in Manitoba’s two national parks, including Riding Mountain National Park, the province said.

Federal licences are needed in the national parks.
