TORONTO – Ben Rice hit a two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning before Jose Caballero added a three-run bomb as the New York Yankees topped the Toronto Blue Jays 8-3 on Sunday afternoon.

Anthony Volpe drove in two runs and scored another for New York (43-27), which picked up its second straight victory after dropping Friday’s opener of the three-game set.

Camilo Doval (3-0) pitched a clean eighth in relief to get the win.

Davis Schneider hit a solo homer for Toronto (34-38). Braydon Fisher (2-2) took the loss in relief.

New York got on the board in the top of the second when Volpe plated Max Schuemann after the left-fielder’s one-out double. Volpe then scored all the way from first on an Ali Sanchez double for a 2-0 lead.

The Blue Jays responded in the third thanks to an infield single Kazuma Okamoto that scored Nathan Lukes. Toronto then made it 2-2 in the fourth when Lukes singled Ernie Clement home from second.

The Yankees retook the lead when Volpe drove home Schuemann for a second time in the sixth, but Schneider thumped his second homer of the season to centre in the bottom of the inning before Rice and Caballero put the Yankees ahead for good in the ninth.

Takeaways

Blue Jays: Andres Gimenez was removed from the starting lineup with left wrist soreness about two hours before first pitch. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was also scratched for a second straight game as the club’s struggling star first baseman continues to deal with back tightness.

Yankees: The American League leaders improved to 17-6 when facing a left-handed starting pitcher this season after Patrick Corbin got the call for Toronto.

Key moment

Yankees first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, who hit a late two-run homer Saturday for the winning margin, reached on an infield single and advanced to second on Fisher’s throwing error in the top of the ninth. Rice hammered his 19th homer of the season to deep right after Goldschmidt was lifted for pinch runner Ryan McMahon.

Key stat

Clement led off the fourth with a single to extend his hitting streak to 10 games against New York dating back to the 2025 American League Division Series.
