Here are the latest developments from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. All times Eastern:

Four games, four draws. That’s the World Cup recap today as Iran and New Zealand played to a 2-2 draw tonight in Inglewood, Calif., albeit both sides had enough chances to claim victory.

10:31 p.m.

Nine minutes after surrendering the go-ahead goal to New Zealand, Mohammad Mohebi nets the equalizer in the 64th minute as the teams are tied 2-all with 25 minutes and change left in the entertaining match.

10:24 p.m.

Elijah Just scores his second goal of the match, 15 minutes into the second half, to give New Zealand a 2-1 lead.

9:55 p.m.

First half is over in Inglewood, Calif., with Iran and New Zealand tied 1-1 in a fast-paced Group G match.

Ramin Rezaeian scores a beautiful goal in the 32nd minute as Iran levels tonight’s match at 1-all.

The Iran national anthem is being played at Los Angeles Stadium in Inglewood, Calif., ahead of tonight’s final World Cup Group G match between New Zealand and Iran.

Despite outshooting Saudi Arabia 25-7 (10-3 on target) and dominating the second half (65 per cent possession to 35), Uruguay is forced to settle for a 1-1 draw in Miami.

Abdulelah Al-Amri scores late in the first half to give Saudi Arabia a 1-0 lead at halftime over two-time World Cup champion Uruguay in Miami in Group H action. 

6:45 p.m.

A Federal Court judge is scheduled to hear an injunction application Tuesday from Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey, whose bid to enter Canada for the World Cup was denied over rape and sexual assault charges in England. The 32-year-old remains in the United States after Canada refused his application to enter the country for Ghana’s opening match against Panama on Wednesday in Toronto.

6 p.m.

Today’s second Group H match between Uruguay and Saudi Arabia is underway in Miami. Top spot in the group is up for grabs if one of the teams can earn a full three points after Cape Verde shocked Spain by holding the 2010 champion to a 0-0 draw earlier today. Two-time champion Uruguay is looking to return to soccer’s elite after failing to advance out of the group stage in 2022.

5 p.m.

Egypt is still looking for its first World Cup win after settling for a 1-1 draw with Belgium. Egypt entered halftime with the lead on a goal from midfielder Emam Ashour. But an own goal committed by Egyptian right-back Mohamed Hany in the 66th minute saved ninth-ranked Belgium from an upset.

4 p.m. 

Vancouver police say they’ve recovered a giant Canada jersey that had adorned one of the “A-maze-ing Laughter” sculptures, also known as the Laughing Men, in Vancouver’s West End before being stolen on Sunday. Deputy Chief Howard Chow says the jersey was recovered Monday morning and has been returned to the West End Business Improvement Association.

3:54 p.m.

Egypt leads Belgium 1-0 at the half in a Group G battle in Seattle.  Midfielder Emam Ashour scored the opening goal in the 20th minute. 

3:00 p.m.

Play is underway in Seattle, where Belgium and Egypt are playing in Group G action at the World Cup. Belgium enters the match ranked ninth in the world and is looking to make amends for disappointing showings in the 2022 World Cup and the 2024 Euro Cup. Egypt star striker Mohamed Salah is looking to celebrate his 34th birthday with his 68th international goal.

2:30 p.m.

Canada’s captain Alphonso Davies remains in return-to-play protocols, meaning he has not been cleared for game action, as the team prepares to take on Qatar at BC Place Stadium on Thursday. The star left back warmed up with his teammates ahead of training but was not expected to take part in the full session as he continues to work his way back from a hamstring injury. All other players were available for full training, including central defender Moïse Bombito, who is getting back to full health after fracturing his tibia while playing for OGC Nice in October.

1:57 p.m.

Tiny Cape Verde has held on for an improbable 0-0 draw with European giant Spain to kick off Group H play at the World Cup. Vozinha, Cape Verde’s 40-year-old goalkeeper, made seven saves for the World Cup debutants at Atlanta Stadium. Today’s other Group H game sees Saudi Arabia face Uruguay later today in Miami.

12:50 p.m.

Spain and Cape Verde are tied 0-0 at halftime of their Group H World Cup match. The 2010 World Cup champions had 12 shots in the first half, but Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha has kept the ball out of the net.

12:05 p.m.

Spain’s starting 11 for its match against Cape Verde does not include teen star Lamine Yamal. The 18-year-old Barcelona forward hasn’t played since sustaining a left hamstring injury in April, but Spain coach Luis de la Fuente declared him fit for the tournament opener. Yamal is available off the bench.

12:01 p.m.

Today’s World Cup action has kicked off in Atlanta, where powerhouse Spain is facing Cape Verde. Spain won its only World Cup title in 2010, but took home its unprecedented fourth European championship in 2024. Cape Verde, an island archipelago off of Africa’s northwest coast with a population just under 525,000, is competing at the World Cup for the first time.

Vancouver’s transit system recorded its busiest day for a BC Place event since the 2010 Olympics as the city hosted its first FIFA World Cup 2026 match Saturday, a 2-0 Australia win over Turkey. TransLink, the regional transit authority, says it recorded more than one million boardings and about 648,200 trips, nearly 18 per cent above a typical Saturday. Stations serving BC Place saw their highest Saturday event-day ridership since the Olympics, with SkyTrain boardings up 25 per cent and SeaBus ridership up more than 37 per cent.

Tunisia is set to sack manager Sabri Lamouchi a few hours after the team’s first World Cup game, according to multiple media reports. Sweden throttled Tunisia 5-1 in its group-stage opener last night in Guadalupe, Mexico. The 54-year-old Lamouchi has won just one of five games since taking charge of the team five months ago. That includes a 0-0 draw in a friendly against Canada on March 31.

One Canada fan near BC Place in Vancouver got an unexpected close-up with Canadian star Alphonso Davies on Saturday — and didn’t seem to realize it. Davies posted a Snapchat video to social media showing himself approaching a supporter wearing his Canada jersey, only to be met with a puzzled look rather than recognition. Davies, who is recovering from a hamstring injury, has yet to play at the World Cup but appears to be enjoying life around the tournament.

FIFA’s anti-discrimination monitor is calling for Australian video review official Shaun Evans to be removed from the World Cup after he appeared to make a hand gesture that resembles a symbol associated with white supremacist groups during a pre-game broadcast Sunday. FIFA has not yet commented on the incident, which occurred before Germany’s opening match against Curaçao. The gesture has also been used as part of the “gotcha” game or “circle game,” and it remains unclear whether Evans intended any political meaning.

8:30 a.m.

Canada is back on the training pitch today after a day of rest in Vancouver. The Canadians opened the World Cup with a 1-1 draw against Bosnia-Herzegovina Friday in Toronto and are part of a four-way tie in Group B, with all four teams sitting on one point after the opening round of matches. Canada’s training home during the World Cup is the Whitecaps FC National Soccer Development Centre at the University of British Columbia. The team’s next test comes Thursday against Qatar at BC Place.
