Half a block of McTavish Avenue near the city’s police headquarters will be officially closed, city council has decided.

The eastern portion of the block between 10th and 11th streets has been gated off since September 2022, as the Brandon Police Service used it as overflow for parking and accessing their headquarters in the city’s downtown.

The BPS expansion created 17 cells so detainees could be kept at the police headquarters instead of at the Brandon Correctional Centre.

BPS deputy chief Greg Hebert spoke to council about the permanent closure in December, saying it would give police a “safe space.”

The space gives officers room away from the public to transfer detainees into the building and adds parking spaces to the often overcrowded lot north of the building.

The western half of the block will remain open for public use, which also allows for access to a back lane.

Council approved BPS’s request in December, and last week’s final vote was to approve a bylaw.
