• 40 YEARS AGO — Run ’n Racquet slammed seven home runs in the first inning en route to an 18-3 thrashing of Alexander in a Brandon Merchants Fastball League game. Ross Taylor and Cam Mealy both homered twice in the inning, while Roger Moyer, Ian Mealy and Jim Scott slugged one each. Scott also homered in the sixth inning in support of winning pitcher Gord McLean.
• 30 YEARS AGO — After spending two seasons behind the bench with the Brandon Wheat Kings of the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League, Brad Wells was hired as head coach of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s Neepawa Natives.
• 20 YEARS AGO — The Virden Oilers and Deloraine Royals played to a 5-5 tie in a SouthWest Baseball League game in Deloraine hours before the Oilers hit the road and earned a 10-5 victory over the Boissevain Centennials.
• 10 YEARS AGO — Rivers product Toon Van Lankvelt led the Canadian men’s volleyball team with 13 kills and three blocks as it improved to 6-0 in FIVB World League play with a 3-1 (24-26, 25-15, 25-23, 25-21) win over Portugal in Saskatoon.
