The City of Brandon will begin implementing a temporary dike closure for Grand Valley Road at the 18th Street intersection today, due to the potential of rising floodwaters along the Assiniboine River.
In a statement issued Wednesday afternoon, the city stated that work will begin this morning as part of ongoing and progressive flood mitigation efforts. Motorists and pedestrians are encouraged to use caution and patience around the work zone and obey all posted signage.
The significant rainfall that hit western Manitoba this week has increased overland flooding in western Manitoba.
In a flood bulletin issued Monday afternoon, the province stated that water levels on reservoirs and lakes, including the Shellmouth Reservoir, Rivers Dam, Minnedosa Dam and Dauphin Lake could rise by one to three feet over the next few days.
Water levels along rivers, creeks and drainage areas within the Assiniboine River basin and Parkland region could rise significantly over a short period of time.
Work on the temporary dike in Brandon will be carried out by Alternative Landscaping Ltd. and is expected to be completed between today and Friday.
During the temporary dike closure, traffic will be detoured using 18th Street North, the Trans-Canada Highway and 34th Street North. The city encourages drivers to plan accordingly and allow for additional travel time.

The city is also reminding residents to stay off the dike system and away from closed trails, parks, and riverbank areas.
High water levels, fast-moving currents, erosion and unstable ground conditions can create significant safety hazards. Barricades, closures and temporary pumps have been put in place to protect the public and to allow city staff to safely monitor and maintain flood protection infrastructure.
Residents are asked to respect all signage, barricades and direction from emergency personnel and city staff.
