• 60 YEARS AGO — Rivers Comets scored their 10th straight win in South Central Baseball League action by stopping Elgin Cubs 6-2. Cam White of Rivers pitched a four-hitter as he went the distance to pick up the win. Wilf Taylor hammered a two-run home run in the third and added a single to pace the 10-hit Comet attack.

• 50 YEARS AGO — Brandon Cloverleafs of the Manitoba Senior Baseball League won their first-ever tournament crown at Birtle Sports Day with a 7-4 victory over Hamiota Red Sox. Rick McFayden’s three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning proved to be the decisive blow.

• 40 YEARS AGO — Don Stevenson hit a two-run homer and two singles as Lenore Aces thumped Kola Cavaliers 10-2 in a Virden and District Fastball League game.

• 30 YEARS AGO — Darren Zimmer helped his own cause with a home run and struck out seven as the Clanwilliam Greys edged the Griff’s Blues 6-5 in Brandon Commercial Men’s Fastball League action. Barry Hopkins drove in the winning run for the Greys in the bottom of the seventh inning. Glen Bentz had two singles and two RBIs for Griffs.

• 20 YEARS AGO — Killarney’s Curtis Nichol left no room for debate in qualifying for the provincial men’s amateur golf championship. Nichol beat all comers by shooting a 73 at The Links at Quarry Oaks to secure one of 27 spots for the amateur championship to be played July 18-21 at the Transcona Golf Club and St. Charles Country Club.

• 10 YEARS AGO — Brandonites Jacob Thomson, Liam Nohr, Riley Paul, Brock Carmichael, Lucas Vasconcelos, Reece Wilson, Liam Kristjanson and Max Paddock are all on one of Manitoba’s 16-and-under boys’ squads that will compete in the National Team Challenge Cup later this month.
