DISTURBANCE LEADS TO FIREARM, DRUG CHARGES

Brandon police arrested a man and charged him with firearm and drug-related offences after responding to a report of a disturbance on Monday.

Officers with the Brandon Police Service responded to a reported disturbance on the 2500 block of McDonald Avenue at around 4:30 p.m., BPS said in a news release. Police said someone was banging on the back door of the house.

Police found a 26-year-old man, who they determined to be the cause of the disturbance, and arrested him, BPS said.

Inside the man’s backpack, BPS said officers found a hunting knife, a sawed-off rifle with a ground-off serial number and model number, a box of ammunition, 5.84 grams of cocaine, 0.41 grams of methamphetamine, a scale and unused baggies.

BPS charged the man with several firearm offences, including unauthorized possession of a firearm and possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm. He was also charged with possessing cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, possessing methamphetamine, failing to comply with his release order and failing to comply with his probation.

The man was held in BPS detention cells overnight and was scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.

MAN CHARGED WITH WEAPON OFFENCES

A man has been charged with weapons offences after police responded to a report of a man refusing to leave a Brandon business on Monday.

Officers with the Brandon Police Service responded to a business on the first block of Ninth Street after receiving a call shortly before 7 p.m. regarding a man who was refusing to leave the business when asked, BPS said in a news release.

Police said officers found a highly intoxicated 28-year-old man and arrested him. The man also had a knife on him, BPS said. Police charged him with carrying a concealed weapon and possessing a weapon.

Police brought the man to BPS detention cells with the intention of releasing him on an undertaking once sober. He is scheduled to appear in court in September.
