• 60 YEARS AGO — Ron Maxwell fired a two-over-par 62 to become the first champion at the new North Hill motel golf course.
• 50 YEARS AGO — In women’s athletics at the Westman Regional Summer Games, Mavis Curtis of Brandon won the 100 metres, while Patty Wadham of Virden was tops in the 800m and the high jump.
• 40 YEARS AGO — Brent Montague hurled a three-hitter as the Waskada Orioles walloped the Reston Rockets 10-3 in a SouthWest Baseball League semifinal game. Montague struck out 15 batters.
• 30 YEARS AGO — Bev Workman and Brett Nohr combined on a three-hitter to lead Griff’s Blues to an 8-1 triumph over the Shilo Stags in a Brandon Commercial Fastball League game. Workman allowed one hit and struck out seven in four innings of work, while Nohr gave up two hits and fanned three.
• 20 YEARS AGO — Brandon Wheat Kings Dustin Kohn and Codey Burki take their first steps towards wearing Canada’s colours this week. Next week, Brandon native Alex Plante and Wheat Kings rookie Keith Aulie get their chance. Kohn and Burki are among 44 players heading to Calgary this weekend to take part in the Canadian junior team summer developmental camp.
• 10 YEARS AGO — The South West Baseball League all-stars will be representing Manitoba at the western Canadian championships. Jagger Thomas scored on a Corey Billaney sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning as South West nipped Elmwood 8-7 in the senior AA provincial all-star final at Stonewall. Curtis Plett picked up the win for South West and Mitch Olsen led the offensive attack going 3-for-4 at the plate.
