Drug bust; domestic violence; disturbances

DRUG POSSESSION

The Brandon Police Service arrested a 52-year-old man on Monday afternoon after he was found sleeping on a porch in downtown Brandon.

Police received a report shortly before 4 p.m. involving an unknown man who was found asleep at a residence on Lorne Avenue near Stanley Park, police said in a news release on Tuesday.

Officers arrived at the residence and found the man was in possession of 14 small bags of methamphetamine, a larger bag containing about five grams of methamphetamine and $150 in cash, police said.

The man has been charged with possessing methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking and possessing proceeds of property obtained by crime.

He was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 8.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

The Brandon Police Service responded to three separate reports related to domestic violence on Monday.

The first incident occurred around 1:20 p.m. in an apartment on 10th Street between McTavish and Van Horne avenues. A 24-year-old man allegedly punched and choked his 19-year-old girlfriend and fled the scene before police arrived on site, the news release said.

Police said the victim had visible signs of assault.

The man was later located by officers in the same vehicle he had left in and was arrested without incident. He was charged with assault and assault by choking and was released from custody on an undertaking.

He is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 26.

Shortly before 6 p.m., police received a report of a fight between a 15-year-old boy and 16-year-old girl on Richmond Avenue between Fifth and Sixth streets.

Police arrived at the scene and determined the girl had been struck in the face by her boyfriend, who had fled the scene, police said. The boy was later found by police and charged with assault before he was released from custody on an undertaking with conditions.

The teens’ parents were informed of the incident.

The boy is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 1.

Police responded to the third case of domestic assault around 7:40 p.m. in a business parking lot on 18th Street between Brandon and Aagaard avenues.

A bystander had called police to report that a man had pushed a woman on the ground, sat on her chest and punched her in the face about five times, officers said.

Police arrived at the scene and saw a 20-year-old woman who showed visible signs of assault, including a swollen eye.

A BPS spokesperson said the suspect and the woman are a couple and that the victim was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

The man had fled the scene on foot, police said. Officers found the man around 9:30 p.m. on 24th Street between College and Park avenues and arrested him.

The man, 25, has been charged with assault and was scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday morning.

BREACH OF PEACE

BPS responded to three incidents over a 24-hour period involving individuals causing disturbances.

In the first incident, two males were involved in a fight at a local hotel. In the second, an individual at a business in the 700 block of 10th Street, believed to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol, allegedly stole a Gatorade and behaved aggressively toward staff and customers in the parking lot.

The third incident involved a male who was crawling on the emergency department ramp at the Brandon Regional Health Centre.

All four suspects were arrested for breach of the peace and taken to BPS detention cells. They were to be released once they were “sober or calm and able to safely care for themselves,” police said.
