Brandon Wheat Kings forward Chase Surkan is among 11 Western Hockey League players who are auditioning for a spot on Canada’s under-18 team that will skate at the 2026 Hlinka Gretzky Cup.
The camp, which includes 27 players, runs from July 27 to Aug. 1 in Edmonton at NAIT Arena and Rogers Place.
Surkan is a Regina product who skated in 45 games last season with Brandon, contributing 20 goals and 18 assists with six penalty minutes. He had a plus-minus of 5.
Brandon took him with the 14th overall pick in 2024.
The other forwards who were invited include Surkan’s former lineman with the Regina Pat Canadians, 2010-born Maddox Schultz, and his fellow Regina Pats prospect, Liam Pue.
The other WHLers are Brock England of the Seattle Thunderbirds, Ben Harvey of Prince Albert, Winnipegger Ludovic Perreault of the Victoria Royals and Kayden Stroeder of the Edmonton Oil Kings.
They will be joined by defencemen Landon DuPont of the Everett Silvertips, who is headed to Michigan next season, Brock Cripps of the Prince Albert Raiders and Boston Tait of the Wenatchee Wild.
Leif Oaten of the Lethbridge Hurricanes is the lone WHL goalie who will attend.
The coaching staff includes Prince Albert’s head coach, Ryan McDonald, Kyle Chipchura of the Oil Kings and goaltending coach Jeff Harvey of the Saskatoon Blades.
The camp includes a scrimmage against Sweden on July 30 and a pre-tournament game against Czechia on Aug. 1.
Canada opens the event against Switzerland on Aug. 3 at 6 p.m. CT.
The medal games are set for Aug. 8.
