Defenceman Carson Carels of Cypress River is among 32 players brought in by Hockey Canada for their World Junior Summer Showcase that begins Sunday in Windsor, Ont.
The former Prince George Cougars blue-liner, who is committed to North Dakota for next season, is one of a dozen players developed in the Western Hockey League, and one of 31 developed in the Canadian Hockey League.
The roster includes eight players eligible to return from Canada’s bronze-medal team in 2026 including Carels, Braeden Cootes (Prince Albert Raiders), Caleb Desnoyers (Moncton Wildcats), Jack Ivankovic (Brampton Steelheads), Brady Martin (Soo Greyhounds), Cameron Reid (Kitchener Rangers), Cole Reschny (ex-Victoria Royals) and Keaton Verhoeff (ex-Victoria Royals).
The other WHLers who were invited are defencemen Ryan Lin (Vancouver Giants), Brek Liske (Everett Silvertips), Daxon Rudolph (Prince Albert Raiders) and Jackson Smith (Tri-City Americans), plus forwards Shea Busch (Everett Silvertips), Chase Harrington (Spokane Chiefs), Tommy Lafrenière (Kamloops Blazers) and Cameron Schmidt (Victoria Royals)
Landon DuPont of the Everett Silvertips was invited but is currently with Canada’s under-18 team at the 2026 Hlinka Gretzky Cup.
The tournament will be held from Dec. 26 to Jan. 5 in in Edmonton and Red Deer.
Canada will practise on July 27 and 28, then play Sweden on July 29, Finland on July 30 and the United States on Aug. 1. » The Brandon Sun
