A 38-year-old woman has been charged with careless driving in connection with a motor-vehicle collision involving a pedestrian earlier this month.
Brandon police provided an update Wednesday on the July 7 incident in which a 16-year-old girl was hit by an SUV while walking in a designated crosswalk on Richmond Avenue near the Shoppers Mall.
The collision occurred around 6:45 a.m., and the driver remained at the scene, police previously said.
The driver was taken into custody, but police did not arrest her at the time.
An investigation found the driver was travelling at the posted speed limit, but wasn’t paying attention to the road, which resulted in the collision, police said in Wednesday’s update.
Police said the charge was deemed “appropriate” after officers completed a “comprehensive investigation” by reviewing video surveillance, examining the scene, analyzing physical evidence and consulting with Crown prosecutors.
The woman has also been issued a serious offence notice under the Highway Traffic Act.
Police said they continue to wish the teen a full recovery.
The victim’s mother previously told the Sun that her daughter had sustained about nine broken ribs, a break in her pelvis, lacerations and road rash, and had to be flown to a hospital in Winnipeg for treatment.
The mother said her daughter was on her way to work when she was struck.
