• 60 YEARS AGO — Forresters came up with an exciting 12-8 win over The Sun fastball squad in an exhibition game. John Krahn was the winning hurler. Ivor Jenks paced Forresters with two singles.
• 50 YEARS AGO — Rich Gregoire of Brandon’s Pizza Place Merchants dazzled the St. Anne’s Saints, pitching a no-hit, 1-0 victory and coming within one batter of tossing a perfect game in Manitoba Senior A Men’s Fastball League. Gregoire retired the first 15 men in order in the seven-inning contest.
• 40 YEARS AGO — The Hamiota Red Sox, behind import pitcher Santana Garza, ended the Brandon Cloverleafs’ Manitoba Senior Baseball League season with a 9-1 victory. Garza limited the Cloverleafs to five singles and struck out 10.
• 30 YEARS AGO — Brad Lyall and Rich Smith pounded home runs to lift the Kelsey’s Giants to a 12-11 win over Griff’s Athletics in Brandon Merchants Fastball League playoff action. The win gave the Giants a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five A-side final series. Craig Blacksmith was the winning pitcher while Rob Huston took the loss. Don Bryant, with a grand slam, P.J. Crane, Ryan Little and Ryan Clark homered for the A’s.
• 20 YEARS AGO — Gord Pazuik of the Shilo Golf and Country Club sits just a stroke back after the opening round of the Manitoba rural men’s amateur golf championship. Paziuk fired a one-over-par 72, one back of Mike Frost of Quarry Oaks at the Selkirk Golf and Country Club.
• 10 YEARS AGO — Revenge never tasted so sweet for the Brandon A&W Marlins. The Manitoba Junior Baseball League pennant winners avenged a 5-0 round-robin loss to the South Jasper Place Jays on Friday with a 4-0 victory in the final to win the western Canadian junior AAA championship on Sunday evening in Weyburn, Sask. Daylon Creasy of Carberry earned the win on the mound for the Marlins, throwing a three-hitter.
