WASAGAMING — Dorelle Fulton got all the help she needed from Kandis Matthews to end the week with a bang.
She saw her sister-in-law’s putt slow down and tail to the right, so she aimed a little left and hit it a little harder, enough to watch a 35-foot breaker find the dead centre of the cup to win the Tamarack golf tournament ladies scramble division on Saturday.
Fulton and Matthews avenged their second straight semifinal loss from a year ago, defeating Jody Bieber and Jayne Troop 4 and 2 at Clear Lake Golf Course.

“Third time’s the charm,” Fulton said. “These ladies took us out last year in the semis, so we knew we were in for a tough match. Those girls are amazing, steady players, so it feels good to come out on top.”
Bieber and Troop shot a 6-over 80 in qualifying. They survived a scare, trailing Jen Thiessen and Lana Dubois until the last hole on Wednesday. They defeated Nadine Falk and Rhonda Ritchie in Friday’s semifinals.
Fulton and Matthews carded 76 in qualifying, then rolled through Lynda Lowry and Janice Meadows, and Tia Coulter and Alexa Hutsal en route to the title match.
They felt confident in their game, despite not seeing too many putts fall earlier in the week.
Fulton and Matthews birdied the first and second holes to take the lead, only for Troop and Bieber to tie it up by the fifth. But the eventual winners replied with two more birdies to make the turn ahead by three.
From there, they didn’t let it get any closer.
“We played like we always play and we’ve been doing this for a while now, whether it’s here or other places we’ve played,” Matthews said. “We have our system and stuck to it. I get it in play and try to play safe, and she just goes swinging. It’s amazing.”
They put themselves in a great position, with two putts to close it out on 16. Of course, they only needed one.
“We didn’t have a lot of long bombs, just trying to keep to those two putts, so that was epic,” Matthews said. “That was amazing.”
It was certainly a fun week for the family, with Matthews’ husband, Joel, reaching the men’s championship flight quarterfinals and taking runner-up Kody Fawcett to the 18th hole.
Matthews’ son Kolton won the junior second flight final on Saturday, while daughter Kailie fell in the first flight consolation final.
Fulton’s father, John Matthews, took the master’s men’s eighth flight final down to the last hole before heading over to watch his family play.
“We love this tournament so much,” Fulton said. “It’s such a family event for us and we’re so grateful.”
