Land titles office moving to 18th Street

Teranet Manitoba is moving its Brandon Land Titles Office from its downtown location to a new site on 18th Street.

The office will relocate from 705 Princess Ave., to C–155 18th St., near Brandon University, with the new digs expected to open Wednesday, Sept. 9, at 8:30 a.m.

The move is intended to improve the experience for people who use the province’s land and personal property registries, Teranet communications manager Graham Schellenberg said.

“The relocation is part of a broader effort to provide accessible registry offices across the province,” he told the Sun.

The focus, he said, has guided recent efforts to relocate from older office locations in Dauphin, Morden, Winnipeg and now Brandon “to modern, accessible locations that better support the needs of property professionals, the public and our team,” Schellenberg said.

The Brandon relocation comes as a number of organizations and businesses have been making decisions about their downtown operations, raising broader questions about the future of office space and services in the city’s core.

Two of Canada’s major banks, BMO and Royal Bank of Canada, are leaving their long-standing downtown Brandon locations next month.

BMO is set to close its branch at 1000 Rosser Ave. and move to a new location at 1650 Park Ave., while RBC’s branch at 740 Rosser Ave. will be consolidated with the existing RBC branch at 661 18th St.

Teranet, however, said the Land Titles Office relocation is focused on the needs of those using its registry services and its employees.

The new Brandon location will have barrier-free entry and it is just steps away from Brandon University, the company stated on its website.

Schellenberg said the move will not result in a change to the registry services available to clients.

“Teranet Manitoba will continue to provide the current registry services it offers through its partnership with the Government of Manitoba,” he said.

The Brandon Land Titles Office is part of Manitoba’s land registry system, providing services related to land titles and property records. Teranet Manitoba operates the province’s Land Titles Registry and Personal Property Registry under a partnership with the Manitoba government.

The relocation also follows similar moves by other Teranet Manitoba offices.

In Morden, the Land Titles Office was based at 351 Stephen St. from the early 1920s until the early 2020s, before moving to its current location at 379 Stephen St.

The Dauphin Land Titles Office had been at 308 Main St. South from 1912 until 2023, before relocating to 110-27 Second Ave. Southwest.

The current Brandon office will close Tuesday, Sept. 8, before services resume at the new 18th Street location the following morning.

The organization thanked clients for their support during the transition and said it looks forward to continuing to serve Manitobans from the new location.

Teranet Manitoba began operating the Property Registry at 705 Princess Ave. on March 28, 2014, after taking over its operation under a licence agreement with the Manitoba government.

The building, however, predates Teranet’s involvement by decades. It was officially opened on Oct. 22, 1958, replacing an earlier Land Titles building that had been constructed in 1890.

The 1958 building was designed by Brandon architect Gilbert C. Parfitt and constructed by Peter Leitch Construction at a cost of approximately $100,000.

Its official opening ceremony was attended by a number of provincial and local officials, including Attorney General Sterling Rufus Lyon, registrar general Harold Roy McKay, Magistrate William Stordy, deputy attorney general Orville Montague Miles Kay, provincial architect Basil Roy McPherson, and Brandon Mayor James Albert Creighton, among others.
