IN LOCAL HISTORY
• 60 YEARS AGO — Elks and Legion played to a 5-5 tie to leave the Brandon and District Pony Baseball League finals still tied. Robbie Crossman led the hitting with a homer and a single. Murray Smith chipped in with a double.
• 50 YEARS AGO — A&W posted a 11-7 victory over The Firebird in Brandon Centennial Fastball League playoffs. Bob Ash, Norm Joss and Larrie Pilling all stroked two singles for the Root Bears. Ray Bukaluk, who tossed an eight-hitter, got the pitching decision over Al Gillis.
• 40 YEARS AGO — Brandon Barbarians clinched first place in the Winnipeg Rugby Union Second Division by crushing Winnipeg Wanderers 40-0. Guy McKim, Darcy Parrott and Pat Mosiuk both scored two tries and Wayne Gross, Don Cooper, Rob Smith and Cam Randall added one each.
• 30 YEARS AGO — Benno Looft sniped twice to pace the German Royals past Park Avenue Titans 4-2 in Brandon Senior Soccer League men’s action. Max Bratzke also scored, while Claude Pellerin and Guenther Roth tallied in a losing cause.
• 20 YEARS AGO — Fittingly, Doug Steeves was leaning against a fence behind the endzone of Kinsmen Stadium Saturday, out of the spotlight, playing the role of onlooker even though the action in front of him was taking place on the day now officially named for him. A longtime Brandon sportsman, Steeves spent the day at the football field as the Rural Manitoba Football League celebrated its opening weekend of action and honoured the man known for building three high school programs in the city.
• 10 YEARS AGO — The Neelin Spartans scored a pair of special teams touchdowns and pulled away late for a 44-20 win over the visiting Beaver Brae Broncos, from Kenora, Ont., in their season-opening Winnipeg High School Football League Andy Currie (A) Division contest.
