IN LOCAL HISTORY
• 60 YEARS AGO — Bruce Kent of Brandon won the high overall trophy, as well as placing first in the Brandon annual fall shoot Class A competition, shooting 97 of a possible 100.
• 50 YEARS AGO — Paul Solon had his second tournament win this summer with an easy six-stroke victory in the 94-man field at the Sunnyside Golf and Country Club men’s open. Solon shot a three-over-par 74 to outdistance his closest pursuer, Brandon’s Dub Mundell, who had an 80.
• 40 YEARS AGO — Defenceman Trevor Semeniuk, a veteran who found himself in a tough fight to make the Brandon Wheat Kings’ roster, gave up the struggle when the 19-year-old left training camp.
• 30 YEARS AGO — The Brandon Barbarians advanced to the semifinals in the third division of the provincial rugby championships with a 29-10 win over the Winnipeg Saracens. Mark Bednorski scored a pair of tries for the Barbarians, who also got tries from Callan Ferguson and Scott McMullan.
• 20 YEARS AGO — Ryan Reaves and Tyler Strautman are on track to suit up in the Brandon Wheat Kings’ season opener next week. The two forwards have been taking part in full contact in practice after being cleared following off-season shoulder surgery, but haven’t played in preseason
• 10 YEARS AGO — What an exhibition game against the Regina Pats will lack for players on the ice today will certainly be made up in other ways for the Brandon Wheat Kings. The team will take a reduced roster to Ochapowace First Nation, which is located north of Whitewood, Sask., with a special 40-minute, three-on-three game planned at the Chief Denton George Memorial Multiplex.
