• 50 YEARS AGO — Richard Scott captured the modified class in his MG Midget, edging Mic Burke and Rob Ransom, as the Wheat City Sports Car Club held its final event of the 1976 slalom series.
• 40 YEARS AGO — Brandon’s Dan Halldorson won his first Canadian Professional Golf Association championship and secured the $20,000 winner’s purse.
• 30 YEARS AGO — A pre-season battle over the backup goaltending position with the Brandon Wheat Kings is likely to go into overtime. Two players — 17-year-old Robert Muntain and 18-year-old David Haun — split the playing duties in four pre-season games, with Muntain posting a 1.80 goals-against average and Haun putting up a 3.42 goals-against average.
• 20 YEARS AGO — Goaltender Tyler Plante was back in Brandon practising with the Wheat Kings after spending a week playing a four-team NHL rookie tournament in Toronto. The Florida Panthers draft pick rejoins veteran Kurt Jory and rookies Joe Caligiuri and Andrew Hayes in a crowded Brandon crease as the Wheat Kings head to Regina for the first game of a home-and-home WHL exhibition series.
• 10 YEARS AGO — Wins have been hard to come by for the Assiniboine Community College Cougars women’s soccer team so expectations seemingly aren’t too high for the new Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference season. New head coach Brian Cornick would respectfully disagree with that conjecture. The first-year coach, who replaced Mark Dabbs and his 1-19-2 record over the past three years, is looking to make an immediate impact with the Cougars. And he’s going to try doing it with a defence-first mindset.
