This tournament was just too easy for Hunter Oakden.
The junior boys’ provincial golf champion and back-to-back Tamarack junior winner cruised through the high school city championship at Glen Lea Golf Course on Thursday, shooting a 3-under 67 to defend his title.
For arguably the top junior player in Manitoba, the high school events are special not for the prestige of the individual event but because of the chance to win with teammates.

His Vincent Massey Vikings squad won the city title again this year, as Brayden Hamm posted an even-par 70 to all but lock it up before Soren Milne and Josh Sveistrup finished their rounds.
“I think we’ve got a good group. We had a good group last year and I’m the only one that’s on the team from last year but all three of my buddies on the team, I golfed with them all summer and they’re really good,” Oakden said.
“Hammer plays in lots of tournaments and I’ve seen him shoot a couple of numbers before. I played with Soren at Tamarack and play with Josh almost every day. Soren and Josh are really good at keeping the ball in play and both good putters.”
The Vikings won the provincial crown last year, as Oakden carded an astonishing 8-under 64 at Oak Island Resort.
The top three of four scores count and while Massey only had three players, Daylan Duncalfe fired 75 and Kale Jones shot 78 to push their team to an eight-shot win over St. Paul’s.
While it’s the last event on the calendar for most golfers, Oakden has been staying sharp instead of stepping back.
“After Tamarack, I didn’t really stop. I played a lot more. It was less driving range and on-course practice. Weight’s off the shoulders, so just swinging freely,” Oakden said, adding he likes his team’s chances at provincials at La Broquerie Golf next Friday.
“I played La Broquerie a while ago and it’s a bendy course, so if we have two guys who can keep it in play and two guys who can shoot some numbers, we should be pretty good.”
