The Neelin Spartans lost their first game of the Rural Manitoba Football League season 20-12 at the hands of the Moosomin Generals on Saturday.
The Spartans found themselves shorthanded going into the contest after starting quarterback Sean Kelly went down with an injury during practice. Things didn’t improve during the game as Taven Adema was injured after rushing for a touchdown early in the game.
Emeka Onuke led the Spartans backfield with 187 rushing yards and a touchdown on 19 carries. Jomi Samuels stood out on defence with 15 tackles, eight assists and a blocked punt.
“So many kids made so many great plays throughout the game,” said head coach Jacob Doerksen. “There was a lot of heart and a lot of grit. They fought right to the end and I thought it was a great game.”
This Friday, the Spartans will travel to Souris to take on the Southwest Sabres.
