CALGARY – Police in Calgary have charged two men with hate-motivated assault after a woman became trapped in an overturned portable toilet.
Police say the woman was using the portable washroom outside a city restaurant in early July when two men tipped it over on to its door, trapping her inside.
Bystanders helped free her, and she was later treated for exposure to waste matter and toxic chemicals.
Police say based on alleged comments made by the pair at the time about the woman’s gender and identity, they believe hate was a motivating factor.
They did not provide specific details on the comments.
The accused – one from Calgary and the other from Kelowna, B.C. – have each been charged with assault causing bodily harm.
The hate allegation is not part of the formal charge, but a judge can consider it as an aggravating factor in sentencing if the accused are found guilty.
“This was a degrading and harmful assault that left the victim trapped, injured and in need of medical care,” Calgary Police Sgt. Chelsea Francois said Wednesday in a statement.
“Hate-motivated crimes have a deep impact, not only on the person targeted but on the broader community.
“There is no place for hate in our city.”
