Sean Kelly rushed for his second touchdown of the game in the final minute as the Neelin Spartans beat the Southwest Sabres 17-14 in Rural Manitoba Football League action on Friday.
Yusef Eltawil carried the ball 17 times for 128 yards to power Neelin to its first win of the season.
“We found a bit of a ground game,” said head coach Jacob Doerksen. “When I say we found a ground game, I mean Yusef found a ground game.”
After a scoreless opening half, Eltawil got the Spartans into the red zone, and Kelly punched the ball in for the first touchdown.
The Sabres answered in the fourth quarter, adding a two-point conversion to take the lead.
Neelin pushed back, and Devin Lucas booted a 35-yard field goal to briefly lead 10-8. However, Southwest scored on its next play from scrimmage.
Then, in the final minute, Kelly hit Taven Adema for a 25-yard catch-and-run to the one-yard line before driving it over the line.
Nonso Onuke led the defence with seven tackles and an assist. Seun Sennuga recorded an interception in the first half for Neelin, which hosts Swan River next Sunday at 2 p.m.
