• 60 YEARS AGO — Brandon College Capettes won the Manitoba Small College women’s’ field hockey title for the second straight year as they swept through their nine game schedule undefeated. Team members are: Karen MacDonald, Dolores Wooley, Laurel Lofgren, Mary Jean Liss, Bonnie Low, Karen MacKay, Cheryl Johnson, Laura Cotts, Pat Sankey, Valerie Hunter, Linda Hill, Edna Guenter, Lorna Armstrong, Captain Donna Starenky, Barb Martinson, Sharon Borley, Sandy Waldmo, Fay Emisch and coach Ruth Sterling.
• 50 YEARS AGO — Robbie Neale, the Central Amateur Senior Hockey League’s top scorer, fired four goals as Brandon Olympics battered East Kildonan-Elmwood Millionaires 8-1.
• 40 YEARS AGO — Thirty-one-year-old Pat Ferris of Brandon won the Canadian lightweight women’s bodybuilding championship in Vancouver.
• 30 YEARS AGO — Maurice Carter led his team to a 109-99 victory in a Brandon University Bobcats intrasquad men’s basketball game. Carter, a six-foot-two guard, pumped in 34 points and snared four defensive rebounds as Team White downed Team Blue at BU.
• 20 YEARS AGO — The Southwest Sabres showed a penchant for rolling the dice but even the highest of high- stakes gamblers needs a little luck once and awhile. The Sabres scored three first-half touchdowns as a direct result of third-down gambles but needed a missed extra point — with a late touchdown added on — in the final minutes of the game to secure a 43-35 win over the Crocus Plainsmen in the Rural Manitoba Football League championship game at Kinsmen Stadium.
• 10 YEARS AGO — Two Brandonites will join Team Manitoba for the four-team Western Canada U16 Challenge Cup that begins Oct. 19 in Calgary. Brandon Midget AAA Wheat Kings netminder Trent Miner and Tristen Robins, who is skating with the Rink Hockey Academy in Winnipeg. Parker Malchuk of Birtle, Chad Nychuk of Rossburn, Cole Muir of Vista and Mark Liwiski of Dauphin also made the team.
