Brandon police arrested a suspect on Wednesday after a girl reported she was chased by an unknown man wielding a knife while she was walking home from school.
The incident was one of two reports of suspicious activity involving children walking home near a school in Brandon, the Brandon School Division said in an email sent out to all parents on Thursday morning.
The school division said police investigated both incidents.
In the only incident described by police, a girl and a family member went to the police station around 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, saying she had been chased by an unknown man about 45 minutes earlier.
The girl said the man approached her from behind and pulled on her backpack, then briefly chased her. She was able to run away uninjured, police said.
Within minutes of leaving the police station, the girl saw the man again in the 2200 block of Louise Avenue and notified police.
Officers located a man matching the description provided by the girl.
The man was taken into police custody and required medical treatment from an onsite paramedic due to being highly intoxicated, police said. He was then taken to the Brandon Regional Health Centre, where he was assessed and medically cleared before going back to the station.
A 30-year-old man was charged with assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon. He was scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.
The school division’s email to parents stressed the need for students to be aware of street safety.
“As a precaution, we wish to take this opportunity to reinforce with all students the importance of safe practices when walking to and from school and being aware of their surroundings,” the school division said.
Children are encouraged to walk with others whenever possible, stay alert to what’s happening around them and tell a trusted adult if something doesn’t feel right, the email said.
“If you or your child notices anything concerning or suspicious, please notify the school administration as soon as possible,” the school division said.
“For an immediate safety concern, contact the police.”
The division didn’t provide details on the ages of the children involved or what school they attend.
