IN LOCAL HISTORY

• 60 YEARS AGO — Deloraine Colts stormed their way into the SouthWest Manitoba High School Football League final by defeating Brandon Krugers 23-18. Deloraine touchdowns were scored by Bob Clelland, Mike Lane and Frank Kailik, while Dave Franklin added a single, one convert and a field goal.

• 50 YEARS AGO — Hamilton and Jones hung on to beat A & W Root Bears 5-4 in Brandon Commercial Hockey League play. Wayne Ferguson, Robbie Crossman, Billy Crossman, Gary Smith and Brian Mulberry scored for the winners.

• 40 YEARS AGO — About 160 people attended a Brandon Cloverleafs roast in honour of Mort Wright and Steve Clark. The two were roasted and toasted by several of their baseball teammates.

• 30 YEARS AGO — Darren Van Oene spared the Brandon Wheat Kings when he potted the winning goal with 18 seconds left in regulation play, but it was goaltender Brian Elder who saved the day. Elder made 43 stops, including 22 in a frantic third period, as the Wheat Kings eked out a 6-5 WHL victory over the visiting Regina Pats.

• 20 YEARS AGO — Jennifer Jones’ 13-game winning streak came to an end in the final of the Casinos of Winnipeg Women’s Classic at the Fort Rouge Curling Club. Jones, with Brandon’s Jill Officer at second, fell 6-1 to Sherry Anderson’s rink from Delisle, Sask., in the championship final. Anderson’s foursome earned $14,000, while Jones’ team pocketed $9,000 in the Manitoba and World Curling Tour event.

• 10 YEARS AGO — The Brandon University Bobcats men’s soccer team picked up a massive 3-1 win over the Red River Rebels (6-1-3) in Winnipeg. First-year forward Nolan Melanson capped a terrific regular season with two more goals to bring his total to 11 and fellow rookie Cole Goyak netted the other. But a 1-1 draw between the Providence University College Pilots (4-5-1) and the Canadian Mennonite University Blazers (5-4-1) later in the day meant the Bobcats (4-5-1) missed the post-season despite finishing with the same record as PUC.
