Two women are facing multiple charges after allegedly spraying bear mace at buyers during a Facebook marketplace cellphone transaction outside a Brandon hotel on Sunday.

The Brandon Police Service reported two women, ages 19 and 22, met the attackers outside a hotel in the 1100 block of 18th Street around 3 p.m., a police spokesperson said on Wednesday.

When the victims handed over cash for the phone, the suspects refused to provide the device and bear-sprayed them before fleeing the area.

The victims hopped into a taxi and followed them to a restaurant, the spokesperson said.

A restaurant employee told the victims that the women had gone into the washroom. Once inside, the victims were able to retrieve their money when a suspect threw the cash over a stall.

The victims left the bathroom and were treated by paramedics while waiting for police.

Officers arrived on scene and spoke with the women, who explained the attackers remained inside the bathroom.

Police arrested the attackers inside the restaurant and found a can of bear spray in a women’s privacy disposal bin. The women, ages 18 and 20, were charged with armed robbery, two counts of assault with a weapon, two counts of administering a noxious substance with intent and possession of a weapon.

Brandon police have a designated zone for buyers and sellers to complete in-person transactions in the northwest corner of the visitor parking lot of the police station. The zone is under continuous video surveillance and is well-lit for people making an exchange.
