REGINA – The federal government is planning to designate the RCMP Heritage Centre in Regina as a national museum.
Ottawa makes the commitment in its budget document.
It says the heritage centre is to get $3 million per year until 2030 to support the transition of becoming a national museum.
The centre, located on the force’s training grounds for cadets, has been pushing to get national museum status since 2020.
It has said the designation would help it deliver enhanced programming while benefiting from more funding.
Canada has nine national museums, with one of in Western Canada – the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg.
“Ensuring we protect the legacy, stories and history of those who put their lives on the line to protect our communities is essential,” says the budget.
“For over 150 years, the RCMP has been a part of the Canadian story.”
