Former Quebec diplomat sees opportunity to rebuild energy ties after U.S. midterms

A former Quebec delegate general in New York says the U.S. midterm results have created an opportunity for Canada to rebuild ties with Americans in the energy industry.

But Catherine Loubier says she doesn’t expect Trump’s tariffs will disappear after this week’s midterms results.

She praised efforts to widen Canada’s energy exports to new markets around the world and urged government and industry officials to continue that work while rebuilding the relationship with the United States.

She also says she expects Trump to double down on his “America First” approach in the last two years of his term.

Statistics Canada to release October labour force survey numbers today

Statistics Canada releases its latest snapshot of the country’s job market today as it unveils its labour force survey for October.

The Canadian economy lost 68,000 jobs in September as the unemployment rate rose a tenth of a percentage point to 6.5 per cent.

According to LSEG Data & Analytics, a Reuters poll of economists suggests expectations for a gain of 13,600 jobs for October and for the unemployment rate to remain unchanged.

The economy has faced headwinds with escalations in the trade war with the United States after talks broke down in late August and a fresh round of tariffs by President Donald Trump.

What to know about Pope Leo XIV’s trip to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru

Pope Leo XIV is returning home to the continent where he spent two decades as a missionary priest and learned to be a pastor, visiting Uruguay, Argentina and his second homeland of Peru.

The Nov. 6-17 trip marks the longest and farthest of his papacy and is coming just three weeks after Leo underwent surgery Oct. 13 to remove a cancerous tumour from his right lung.

Latin America still is home to around 40 per cent of the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics, but the Catholic proportion of the region’s population has shrunk in recent years.

The decreases are especially notable in the countries Leo will visit.

Cole Caufield scores OT winner as Canadiens come back to beat Mammoth 5-4

Cole Caufield scored the winner 30 seconds into overtime as the Montreal Canadiens overcame Logan Cooley’s hat trick to beat the Utah Mammoth 5-4 in an action-packed affair Thursday night.

Captain Nick Suzuki had a goal and two assists in his return from a six-game absence for Montreal, while Adam Engstrom added his first career goal, and Kirby Dach and Arber Xhekaj also scored.

Montreal made unwanted history when the team lost 5-4 to the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday after blowing a 4-0 lead with 2:39 remaining in regulation, marking the latest four-goal comeback in NHL history.

The Canadiens visit the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday, while the Mammoth plays the Ottawa Senators.
