A team of more than 20 parents and children have rebuilt a cabin at Asessippi Ski Hill to allow the local ski club to bounce back from flood damage.

Asessippi Ski Club members decided last month to get together and repair their shack and patio that were “inundated with water” at the base of the Porcupine chair, head coach Nigel Simms told the Sun on Friday.

A crane and two skid steers were deployed by parents to repair the patio.

“It was all askew. It was washed out and damaged and bent and everything else,” Simms said. “If the families did not roll up their sleeves and just put the work in … this stuff doesn’t get fixed.”

The patio was lifted by crane and moved with skid steers to allow volunteers to rebuild the foundation under the cabin, he said. The community members also gutted the interior of the warming shack, re-insulated the walls and cleared muck deposited in the area from last summer’s flooding.

The shack and its patio are key to the club’s operations at the ski hill because they are used for warming up and timing events, giving out awards and hosting fires, Simms said.

”Our work as a ski club would have been severely compromised without this happening,” he said.

“It has been a remarkable story of community effort and what families are prepared to do for their children,” he said. “These are farm families, a lot of rural folks. Like, they kind of just get it done. They’re remarkable.”

Due to the spongy, flooded ground this year, they had not been able to go on site to conduct repairs until last month.
