The cost of post secondary education continues to rise but Brittney Dubyts of Killarney, as well as Kara Burman and Connor Njegovan of Winnipeg, are each getting a helping hand from the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada.
Each was awarded a $1,000 scholarship and are headed to school in September.
The MS Society’s Scholarship Program, supported by Billy Talent & Friends, is designed to help students who have MS or have a parent with MS. Burman, Dubyts and Njegovan are three of 100 students receiving a portion of the $100,000 disbursed this year.
Dubyts is taking psychology at the University of Manitoba while Burman is taking courses in Environmental Design, also at the U of M. Njegovan is taking Wood Technology at Red River College.
“We are thrilled Kara, Connor and Brittney have been selected. They have made their community proud and we wish them well in their upcoming studies” said Wendy O’Malley President for the MS Society of Canada, Manitoba Division.
Launched in 2006, the MS Society of Canada Scholarship program has offered financial assistance to students who have MS or have a parent with MS.
The scholarship program became possible when Aaron Solowoniuk, MS youth ambassador and drummer for Juno Award-winning rock band, Billy Talent, came to the MS Society looking for a creative way to use his influence to help youth impacted by MS. Aaron himself was diagnosed with MS when he was 22.
The next scholarship competition will begin to accept applications in December 2010 with funds being distributed in early 2011.
