PELICAN NARROWS - The remote northeastern Saskatchewan community of Pelican Narrows has been left shaken after a shooting near its local health clinic that killed one person and injured another.

RCMP say a suspect was taken into custody late Monday, almost six hours after residents in the community about 500 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon were ordered to shelter in place.

Officials with Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation say that for safety reasons, schools and the local band office will be closed the rest of the week.

It also says the health centre will offer limited services to clients with serious medical needs.

OTTAWA - Three big U.S. tech companies control the vast majority of Canada’s publicly-available cloud infrastructure, says a new report released ahead of the government’s national AI strategy, which is expected to include measures targeting AI sovereignty.

Amazon, Microsoft and Google hold 85 per cent of public cloud market share in Canada — much higher than their global average of 66 per cent, according to the report from the Canadian Anti-Monopoly Project released Tuesday.

The federal government is set to release an AI strategy this week. It's expected to call for building a foundation for Canadian sovereign AI as one of its six pillars.

"AI for All will support the building of sovereign compute infrastructure at scale — resilient, sustainable, and under Canadian governance, and grow Canada’s exceptional AI researchers and talent pool," the government said in the spring economic statement.

Alphonso Davies happy to be back with Canadian teammates ahead of World Cup

The Canadian Press 3 minute read 12:04 AM CDT

EDMONTON - It wasn't the way Alphonso Davies wanted to return to the field in his hometown of Edmonton, but Canada's captain was still happy to be there.

Davies got some running in before his teammates took on Uzbekistan in a pre-World Cup friendly at Commonwealth Stadium on Monday.

The strides gave him a chance to test out the injured hamstring that prevented him from joining the group for training camp in Charlotte, N.C., last week.

“It feels nice to get back on the pitch and do some running," the 25-year-old Bayern Munich defender said after watching Canada down Uzbekistan 2-0. "I’m happy to be home and I’m happy to be with the boys and support them. Whether it’s on or off the pitch I’m happy to do it.”

Marsch confident Canada will generate offence, goals at World Cup

EDMONTON - Scoring goals in the World Cup has always been difficult for Team Canada, but head coach Jesse Marsch is feeling a little more confident after watching his men's team perform in a 2-0 win over Uzbekistan in Monday night’s international friendly.

With an announced crowd of 46,164 cold, wet fans watching, Canada got second-half goals from Jonathan Osorio and Jayden Nelson and played a strong defensive game to keep their opponents off the scoresheet.

“There’s been a lot of talk that we haven’t scored goals from the run of play, understandingly so because we hadn’t,” Marsch told a post-match news conference. “But I kept saying the goals are coming because I know we have a lot of firepower, and I kept also kept saying the most important thing is keeping clean sheets and preventing opponents from getting goals.”

Canada gave up three scoring chances in the first half but mostly kept Uzbekistan from mounting many serious threats in the second half.

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russia launched hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles against Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities overnight, killing at least 14 civilians and wounding more than 100 others, authorities said Tuesday.

Some people were trapped under the rubble of apartment buildings, including a 3-year-old child whose body was pulled out by emergency crews in the central Ukrainian city of Dnipro, officials said, as the attack stretched from night into day and the boom of explosions reverberated across cities.

Kyiv residents had been on edge for days after Russia warned that a massive aerial attack was coming and warned foreign diplomats to leave the Ukrainian capital. None appeared to heed the call.

“A large-scale attack and an explicit statement by Russia: if Ukraine is not protected from ballistic missiles and other missile strikes, those strikes will continue,” Zelenskyy said in response to the attack, urging more support from the U.S. and European countries.

EDMONTON - The temperature was about 20 degrees warmer and the players dealt with heavy rain on the pitch instead of snow, but the outcome for Canada’s national soccer team on Monday night was the same as it was in 2021.

Jonathan Osorio scored for Canada at the 58-minute mark of the second half and Jayden Nelson added an insurance marker one minute into stoppage time in its 2-0 win over Uzbekistan at Commonwealth Stadium. It was the first of two pre-World Cup friendlies.

Tani Oluwaseyi gave Osorio a clear shot from just outside the right side of the box and his shot eluded keeper Abduvohid Nematov.

Nelson then chipped the ball past Nematov from in close in the first minute of stoppage time.

South Carolina jury finds store owner not guilty of murder in killing of Black teen

The Associated Press 3 minute read Updated: 12:58 AM CDT

COLUMBIA, S.C (AP) — A South Carolina jury on Monday found a store owner not guilty of murder in the 2023 shooting of a Black 14-year-old.

The jury returned the verdict for Chikei Rick Chow. Chow, 61, who is Asian, shot Cyrus Carmack-Belton in the back after chasing him from his convenience store in Columbia. He maintained he acted to defend his son.

The killing sent waves of anguish and grief through the African American community in Richland County, where nearly half the population is Black.

After the verdict was read, sobs and cries of distress could be heard coming from Carmack-Belton’s family seated in the gallery. Chow sat silently frozen before slowly bowing his head onto his interlocked hands.
