Reid Caruthers might not have intended to blank three ends in the back half of Thursday evening’s all-Winnipeg clash with Mike McEwen.

Regardless, it paid off.

Caruthers drew for one one in the 10th end — his first point since stealing one in the fourth — for a big 4-3 victory at the Home Hardware Canada Cup of Curling at Westman Place.

Tim Smith/The Brandon Sun Winnipeg skip Reid Carruthers picked up two wins Thursday at the Home Hardware Canada Cup of Curling and is one of three men's teams at 3-1 heading into the final day of round-robin play.

The win improved Caruthers to 3-1, while McEwen’s playoff hopes took a big blow as he dropped to 1-3 following a 7-3 victory over Toronto’s John Epping in the morning.

Brad Jacobs is also at 3-1 after sealing his second win of the day by picking out a Steve Laycock stone with his final stone in 10 for one and a 6-4 win.

The game lacked action early with Jacobs retaining the hammer into the fourth end after three straight blank ends. Then the Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., skip grabbed a deuce. Lacycock (2-2) responded with singles in five and six, the latter of which came after Jacobs tried making a difficult double takeout for another blank.

But the shot of the game came two ends later when Jacobs perfectly executed a soft-weight tap back for three and a commanding 5-2 lead.

Joining Jacobs and Caruthers atop the men’s standings after Draw 6 is the Mark Nichols-led Team Gushue.

Nichols had a chance to get to 4-0 and be assured of no less than a tiebreaker but he was doubled up 8-4 by Epping, who earned his first win of the event and sits at 1-3 and still has a sliver of hope for reaching a tiebreaker.

The two evening matches on the women’s side weren’t tightly contested.

Jennifer Jones continued to steamroll the competition as she scored two in one, three, five and stole two more in six to beat her Winnipeg rival 9-4 and clinch at least a tiebreaker. Jones is 4-0.

Einarson, who started with two surprising wins over defending champion Rachel Homan and 2014 winner Val Sweeting on Wednesday, now sits at 2-2 after she gave up steals in the ninth and 10th ends to Tracy Fleury earlier in the day.

Conversely, Sweeting rebounded from two opening-day defeats with a pair of victories Thursday, the second of which was of the dominant variety, 6-2 over Edmonton’s Kelsey Roque (0-4).

Sweeting stole three in the third end and another in the fourth to get back to .500 heading into Friday.

Draw 7 action gets underway Friday at 8:30 a.m.
