Jacob Tierney takes first crack at unscripted TV with foul-mouthed Alberta brothers

Jacob Tierney is used to directing actors on scripted television. But with his latest project, the creator of Crave’s “Heated Rivalry” is venturing into unscripted TV for the first time, teaming up with a pair of foul-mouthed yet family-oriented brothers from Alberta.
The Montreal-born filmmaker serves as an executive producer on Prime Video’s new reality series “Young Farts Trailer Parts.” At Amazon’s Upfront presentation in May, Tierney joked that the show’s stars — brothers Jagger Glowatsky and his younger sibling, Dawson — wouldn’t listen to a word he said.
“Nobody does what I say. I don’t like it,” Tierney laughed while on stage during the press event.
“It was a whole learning curve for me in the land of, you know, planning out an unscripted show is kind of taking what you know about these guys, what they do well and try to give them the right platform to genuinely be themselves.”
In an interview, the Sherwood Park, Alta.-born brothers told The Canadian Press the family has always been entrepreneurial, and in the series discuss how they saw an opportunity in the RV sector. The duo realized that there was more money to be made in selling parts, rather than the entire RV.
The brothers said they started uploading videos of their business to the internet and it really started to take off.
“We just had a half sack of beer and tried making videos for social media … I think a lot of people, even just viewers on our social media saw just, these are real guys running a real business and they’re funny. I think with Jacob Tierney, he went, ‘These guys are just Canadian. They’re just two funny guys.'” Dawson said.
Tierney, the award-winning producer known for his scripted series “Shoresy” and “Letterkenny,” said Lionsgate Canada, the production company for “Young Farts,” sent him a tape of the Glowatsky brothers and he loved it.
Jaggar said from the very start Tierney “really saw the vision” for the show.
“His name carries such a big weight. As far as Canadian comedy goes, it is just so surreal that he is a part of this show,” Dawson said, while sitting beside his older brother in Toronto.
The brothers acknowledged that their constant swearing on the show had to be curbed when talking to press.
“The biggest thing we learned about moving away from our rural town and going to do interviews is you can’t swear. I’d love to,” Dawson said, with both noting in unison, “But we’re professional.”
The six-episode reality series premieres on Prime Video this Friday, and shows the Glowatsky brothers managing their family-run RV parts shop in Vegreville, Alta. The business is going through financial issues, especially through the winter months when there is less demand. This leads the brothers to expand from selling just salvaged parts to also building a haunted house.
The family has become well known in Alberta for staging the annual attraction, but this year the stakes are higher: the haunted house needs to be a hit to bring in some much-needed revenue.
“It’s funny because you literally think, oh, movie madness, like our lives are like that. We were literally building a haunted house, stressed. I had a kid, we were doing this bit, like, it was so authentic and so funny to see all the stuff we actually had going on,” Dawson said.
Jagger said he launched the RV parts business in 2018, and Dawson joined after graduating from high school. The company’s success eventually landed the brothers on CBC’s “Dragons’ Den” in 2021, where they pitched the business to the investors.
“(It) was a cool experience too, but that was just our business. I think what this show showcases is all the behind-the-scenes. It’s our family, it’s literally just a crazy family doing crazy things. There’s chaos, there’s heart, there’s so much people can resonate with,” Dawson said.
The brothers split management responsibilities, with Jagger handling a lot of the business side, while Dawson gets the social media buzzing.
Their TikTok page is filled with outrageous stunts promoting their salvage yard and has amassed 3.3 million likes and over 380,000 followers.
Dawson credits his creative side for dreaming their memorable business name into reality.
The younger brother said he woke up one night at 3:00 AM, typed a few words into his phone and fell back asleep. The next morning, he showed his brother what he’d come up with: “Young Farts RV Parts.”
“We didn’t realize until we chose it afterwards, but most of our clientele is retired in the RV industry and most of them refer to themselves as old farts, which we didn’t even realize until they started coming in and every single person said, ‘I’m an old fart, you’re the young farts,'” Jagger said.
The series was filmed last summer, and the brothers said they are excited to hear the feedback when people get a chance to see the show.
“We laid it all out on the table. We are who we are, and I’m excited to see the public’s reaction, good or bad. I mean, it’ll be very interesting,” Dawson said, as he and his brother cracked up.
