There were 17 new cases of COVID-19 discovered in Manitoba on Friday, including 10 in Prairie Mountain Health.

Chief provincial public health officer Dr. Brent Roussin said that the cases in the Brandon cluster are still not believed to be workplace-transmitted, despite four more employees at the Maple Leaf Foods pork processing plant testing positive for the virus. There are now eight Maple Leaf employees who have tested positive for the virus.

The total number of cases connected to the Brandon cluster is 34, six higher than Thursday’s count.

There are now 132 active cases of COVID-19 in Manitoba, with nine people hospitalized and three in intensive care. The five-day test positivity rate is currently at 1.1 per cent, up from 0.46 per cent on Tuesday.

While Roussin has yet to specifically name Maple Leaf, he did bring up the positive case detected in a Tim Hortons employee in Brandon first reported by the Sun on Thursday.

He said that possible exposure to the virus may have occurred at the restaurant on Aug. 1, although the risk of transmission from that case is considered to be low.

Asked by the Sun if there is any risk from a positive case in an employee at the Brandon Walmart first announced yesterday, Roussin said an investigation determined that the employee was not working while contagious.

The employee last worked at the Walmart on July 26, according to an email from Walmart’s corporate media relations team to the Sun sent on Thursday.
