The province announced five new COVID-related deaths and 138 new cases of the virus during the weekend.

The dead include four people from the Winnipeg health region and one person from Interlake-Eastern.

Northern health region led the pack in new cases with 59, followed by Winnipeg at 52 and Southern Health-Santé Sud with 13, while nine cases were found in Prairie Mountain Health and five were reported in Interlake-Eastern.

There are now 891 active cases of COVID-19 in Manitoba, of which 21 are in Prairie Mountain Health — a number that lingers in the same ballpark it has been since mid-February.

Provincially, this is the lowest active case count since Oct. 12, when there were 878 active cases.

There are currently 148 people in hospital as a result of COVID-19, including active cases and those no longer infectious.

Of those in hospital, 23 are in intensive care.

In Prairie Mountain Health, two people are in hospital and no people are in intensive care.

The current five-day test positivity rate is 4.5 per cent provincially and 3.1 per cent in Winnipeg.

In addition to sharing daily numbers during the weekend, the province advertised a new milestone: 100,000 doses of vaccine administered.

“We know we still have much work to do so that we can return to our new normal with COVID-19,” Health and Seniors Care Minister Health Stefanson said in a release. “It’s also important to acknowledge hard work, commitment and dedication from those on the front lines and on our Vaccination Implementation Task Force who have made this possible.”

The first vaccine was administered in Winnipeg on Dec. 16, 2020, and since then almost 200 congregate living sites have been visited by immunization teams.

The province has also set up supersites for vaccinations, including one at Brandon’s Keystone Centre.

The province’s goal is to build an immunization framework capable of giving 20,000 doses per day.

More than 20 community vaccination pop-up sites are scheduled to open before the end of the month.
