The province recorded 529 new cases of COVID-19 during the weekend alongside three virus-related deaths.

Of new cases, 59 were in Prairie Mountain Health, which joins the balance of the province in ushering in the third wave of the virus with spiking numbers.

The Westman-based health region recorded 166 active cases Sunday, which is the highest it has been since mid-December, although it came close on Jan. 29, when 164 active cases were recorded.

The region’s current active case total is a far cry from the 17 recorded March 11.

Active cases in Prairie Mountain Health include 55 in the Porcupine Mountain district, followed by 28 in Brandon, 24 in Agassiz Mountain, 17 in Turtle Mountain and 11 in Dauphin, with the balance spread through other districts.

In addition to those in Prairie Mountain Health, new cases in Manitoba recorded during the weekend include:

• 17 cases in the Interlake-Eastern health region;

• 46 cases in the Northern health region;

• 42 cases in the Southern Health-Santé Sud health region

• 371 cases in the Winnipeg health region.

New deaths related to COVID-19 announced during the weekend include a man in his 40s from the Winnipeg health region, a woman in her 60s from the Winnipeg health region and a man in his 80s from Prairie Mountain Health linked to the outbreak at the Russell Health Centre.

There are currently 139 people in hospital as a result of COVID-19 in Manitoba, including 37 in intensive care.

In Prairie Mountain Health, nine people are in hospital, of whom two are in intensive care.

The current five-day COVID-19 test positivity rate is 7.1 per cent provincially and 7.6 per cent in Winnipeg.

The province also announced Sunday it has administered more than 400,000 doses of vaccine to protect Manitobans against COVID-19.

This means more than 30 per cent of people aged 18 and older have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

“Getting immunized not only protects ourselves, but our friends, families, neighbours and communities,” Dr. Joss Reimer, medical lead of the Vaccine Implementation Task Force, stated in a release. “The vaccine builds on the fundamentals we’ve been practising for so long now, and will help reduce the risk and the spread of COVID-19.”
